Thursday to Sunday

Thursday Morning to Saturday Midnight

The long stretch of the casino week starts at 9 a.m. on Thursday. From then the floor runs without a closing, through Friday and Saturday, until Saturday ends at midnight. For a weekend away, those hours frame every evening.

On Sunday the doors open again at 9 a.m., with closing at 1 a.m. Hours between midnight Saturday and the Sunday opening are not published, so do not rely on them. For holiday hours, check the casino's website or call 519-364-7606.

At the Arcade Bar on the floor, service stops at 1 a.m. every night, Friday and Saturday included. Its plated breakfast runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

    From the Towns Around

Start with the nearest towns. In a straight line, Walkerton is 9.8 km to the west, Durham 17 km to the east and Chesley 17.8 km to the north. A road is always longer than the line, and the guide does not estimate driving times.

Weekend drives from farther start in Owen Sound, 47.3 km north, and Kincardine, 48.6 km west. Kitchener lies 88.4 km to the south; Toronto is 142.6 km to the east. The casino is reached by car: no bus route, shuttle, taxi stand or hotel on site is published. On race days fans park for free, while parking details for other days are not published.

    Getting the Whole Group In

Entry is for people 19 or older with valid government-issued photo ID. Anyone 21 or younger also needs a secondary piece of identification with their name on it. That second card matters for the youngest in a group of friends. People who have been trespassed or self-excluded from this casino or any Ontario gaming property may not visit.

The tag tool below checks a whole group at once. The ages typed into it are not sent anywhere or kept.

The Floor on a Friday Night

The casino floor holds 289 slot machines. Table games are electronic: 18 interconnected stations, some automatic and some dealer-assist, run Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat and War. No live table games and no poker room are listed.

At the back sits the Hanover Raceway Simulcast Theatre. Horse races from other tracks are shown live there and can be bet on. On Friday and Saturday it opens from 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday run from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Wednesday and Sunday the screens stay on with no staff. An ATM is inside the casino, and the cashier's cage exchanges U.S. currency.

      Eating Under One Roof

The Arcade Bar is on the casino floor. Pre-made items and an Arcade menu are available 7 days a week, between 9 a.m. and 1 a.m. A plated breakfast is also served between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

MATCH Eatery & Public House, a contemporary pub themed around sports and entertainment, is one of two restaurants. The Buffet is the other. Both can be entered from the main entrance or from a patio entrance. Neither has published regular hours, so call 519-364-7606 before planning a meal around them.

Grounds Shared With a Harness Track

Playtime Casino Hanover shares its grounds with Hanover Raceway, a Standardbred harness-racing track at 265 5th Street. The Hanover, Bentinck & Brant Agricultural Society runs it. Live racing runs in a summer season, with dates posted on hanoverraceway.com.

The raceway first got slots on February 21, 2001. Gateway took them over in May 2017 within the Southwest Gaming Bundle, through a 20-year OLG agreement. Next, an $18 million expansion relocated the casino to the Carriage Hall of the agricultural society, behind the old building. The grand opening as Playtime Casino Hanover was in April 2019.

      Online in Ontario

      The Ontario Online Market

On April 4, 2022, Ontario opened its regulated online gambling market. It is conducted and managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO. For a private online casino to be legal in Ontario, it needs AGCO registration plus an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. Regulated sites are listed at igamingontario.ca. OLG, the provincial agency, runs its own online casino, OLG.ca.

People 19 and over may play online, but only while physically located in Ontario. Hanover lies in Ontario, yet the 5th Street casino and an online site are not the same thing. Through BetGuard, at betguard.ca, a person can exclude themselves from all regulated Ontario online gambling sites, including OLG.ca. Terms are 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or a length of their choosing. Land-based casinos are not covered.
